The exercise to upgrade six medical colleges of the state including GSVM Medical College and give them autonomy has started. Recently, Director General of Medical Education and Principal Secretary held a meeting in this regard in Lucknow, in which principals of other medical colleges including GSVM were present. At present, the government has started the exercise of upgrading the medical colleges of Agra, Prayagraj, Gorakhpur, Jhansi and Meerut including GSVM and making them autonomous institutions.

According to informed sources, the government’s intention behind this is to provide better treatment to those middle class families who do not come under the purview of Ayushman card. By becoming autonomous, better treatment will be available at affordable prices. If these medical colleges become autonomous institutions, their budget can increase manifold. Currently they get only Rs 10 crore for the equipment. Whereas institutions like Lucknow KGMU, SGPGI and Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences get a budget of Rs 250 to 300 crore for equipment. Currently, doctors are appointed through a commission, which takes a long time. Once an autonomous institution is formed, the director will have the authority to appoint employees or take action against doctors if they do not work. It is claimed that the OPD prescription will be available for Rs 50 and all the modern tests and medicines for every disease will also be available with a discount of about 60 to 70 percent.
